Fish Pole Bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea-syn. Bambusa aurea) Plant. Very widespread grass, due to its ornamental qualities and its high resistance to low temperatures. Fish Pole Bamboo botanically belongs to the Poaceae or Gramineae family, and is native to the Fujian and Zhejiang regions of south-eastern China. It is a perennial, rhizomatous, evergreen species, of fast growth rate and erect, with dense canopy and a size of about 10 m. It has woody, erect, cylindrical stems - green and yellowish-green - and a woody rhizome, through which it forms clumps and spreads. The leaves are simple, papery or leathery in texture, lanceolate to linear, with entire margins and green in colour. Flowering - of no ornamental value - occurs after the age of 15 to 20 years, while fruiting means the death of the parent plant, as it is a monocarpic species. Bamboo is an easy-to-grow grass, has no serious problems with pests and diseases and has almost no maintenance requirements. Its growth is favoured when it is placed in sunny or semi-shaded areas, in fertile soil or a soil mixture that has excellent drainage but retains the necessary moisture. It can be used in various ways in gardening and landscape architecture, usually planted in groups in gardens and parks, in compositions with other plants or to create a free-growing or formal hedge or windbreak.
Notes:
Phyllostachys aurea is a highly invasive species and behaves as a hardy weed. For this reason, precautions must be taken to ensure that it does not spread.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
