Figuring out exactly how much pebble, gravel, or decorative stone you need is simpler than it sounds. Follow these four steps to avoid over-ordering — or running short mid-project.
Step 1 — Measure your space
Measure the length and width of the area you want to cover. Multiply the two figures to get the surface area in square metres (m²). Example: 10 m × 7 m = 70 m².
Step 2 — Choose your layer depth
The right depth depends on the size of the material:
- Fine pebbles (1–3 cm): A layer of 4–5 cm is sufficient.
- Coarse pebbles (6–7 cm): You'll need a depth of at least 10 cm for a visually appealing, stable finish.
Step 3 — Calculate cubic metres
Convert the depth to metres (e.g. 6 cm = 0.06 m), then multiply:
70 m² × 0.06 m = 4.2 m³
Step 4 — Convert to tonnes
Multiply the cubic metres by the specific weight of the material. For most types of pebbles and gravel, this is approximately 1.5 tonnes/m³:
4.2 m³ × 1.5 = 6.3 tonnes
Pro tip: Always add 5–10% extra to account for losses during installation and spreading. For gardens, patios, pathways, and planting borders, fine gravel offers excellent coverage and helps retain soil moisture, while coarse pebbles create a bold, high-impact decorative effect.
