The Sour Cherry (Prunus cerasus L. - syn. Cerasus vulgaris) belongs botanically to the genus Prunus and to the family Rosaceae. It is a small deciduous fruit tree whose height can reach 9 to 10 m. Seeks sunny places, at altitudes up to 1800 m, and cold areas (-22 to -25 °C). It is grown in fertile, deep, cool, medium-textured soils, which are acidic to slightly alkaline, and well drained. The Sour Cherry has bi-toothed, elliptical, bright green leaves, and hermaphroditic, white, self-fertile flowers. It blooms rather late in the spring and ripens its fruits, which are drupes, from May to June. It bears fruit from the 3rd to the 4th year of cultivation, to reach normal yields in the 10th to 15th year, being productive until the age of 30 to 40 years. Sour cherries are nutritious and delicious, for those who like sour tastes, while they are also used in folk medicine for the treatment of various diseases.
