The English Yew (Taxus baccata) is a native long-lived coniferous tree of medium growth belonging to the Taxaceae family. It is also known by the names Common Yew, or European Yew, and is found sporadically in Greece, usually in Fir forests. It has a conical shape, deep green foliage of very dense volume, while it is a shade plant that presents from all the trees of Greek nature the greatest ability to grow in dimly lit or even sunless locations. It can be planted in almost any type of soil, which is rich in humus, has excellent drainage, and is acidic or slightly alkaline. A feature of English Yew is the production of new shoots and branches on older ones, a fact that has long been used by gardening as well as landscape architecture, to create living fences, with simple or elaborate shapes. In addition to the hedges, the English Yew is also planted as an individual tree or in groups. All parts of the plant are toxic, except of the red aril, the pericarp, which bears the female trees. These red fruits, however, add an extra ornamental element to the Taxus baccata tree.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the conifer plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large conifer shrubs and trees are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
